Current high demand and strong pricing is enabling drought impacted cattle farmers to offload stock and prepare for predicted warm and windy conditions ahead of the storm season.
However, ongoing dry conditions are proving difficult for some and Rural Business Support (RBS) is urging farmers doing it tough to speak with an experienced Small Business Financial Counsellor.

Based in Darwin, Peter Cottle is fulfilling a long time goal for RBS to provide direct, localised support for drought impacted NT primary producers and small businesses beyond the farm gate.

Free, independent and confidential services for eligible clients, RBS helps small business owners navigate the daily demands of running their business and find clarity in uncertain times.
Holding a strong belief in the untapped agricultural potential of Northern Australia, Peter’s expertise includes small business operations and working in corporate agriculture in roles around the country. He also operates his own small agriculture focused business in Kununurra, Western Australia.

Peter says that while seasonal conditions vary across the Territory, industry bodies are reporting that NT cattle numbers are down by around 20 percent, placing a strain on many farmers.

“It can be challenging to ask for help, but this is where my experience can be useful,” Peter said.
“Together, we can throw around suggestions to make the decision making process less overwhelming for you. Whether it’s looking at financial assistance, options until income levels improve, exploring a low interest loan from the Regional Investment Corporation, or business transfer or succession plans.”

The Darwin based role is the result of additional Australian Government funding to expand the support that RBS is already providing for primary producers through the Rural Financial Counselling Service (RFCS) and work of Rural Financial Counsellors Lloyd Wright and Lachie Hood.
