WEBINAR: For the short gain or the long haul?

Webinar

An initiative of the NT Department of Primary Industry and Fisheries

30 June, 2016 at 1:00 PM ACST

Join Jodie Ward, a Pastoral Production Officer with DPIF in Katherine, to discuss managing your country for the long haul.

We all weigh our sale cattle, we know the pregnancy rates of our breeders and weaning rates for each paddock.

But how much do we really know about the most important asset on our place, the pastures?

  • Do we recognise the pasture species and what they mean for land condition and productivity?
  • Do we know how many kg/ha or grazing days there are in each paddock?
  • Can we confidently list the condition of our pastures on a paddock by paddock basis?

This is generally the less "sexy" aspect of running a cattle station, but it is the linchpin of long term productivity. We all want to leave country in better condition than we found it, so how do you ensure that you are optimising production, without risking land condition decline, which can happen slower than the eye can see, or dramatically once country reaches a certain tipping point?
