Barkly Landcare and Conservation Association (BLCA)
BLCA has members that include grazing families, some of Australia’s major pastoral companies, indigenous associations, a mining company, local and territory government organizations. These members own and or manage approximately 75% of the pastoral leases in the Barkly Region.
Current projects include Collaborative integration of biodiversity
and fire management on the Barkly rangelands; riparian
restoration of Newcastle Creek/Longreach Waterhole; raising
awareness of biodiversity issues in relation to grazing
management and Best management practices in erosion
control.
A
key initiative of BLCA is the seed harvesting business.
The native seed harvesting business was developed with the view to generate an income
that could be injected back into one of the regions significant natural resource management
issues - weeds. The aim is to independently fund weed control in the region and has made a
profitable income.
The BLCA was nominated for the 2004 National Landcare Awards in two categories won at
the Territory Landcare awards ; The Sensis Landcare Catchment Award for Excellence and
Innovation in Creating and Carrying out a Catchment Plan. The BLCA was recognised for the
Interim Natural Resource Management strategy “Collaborative management of semi arid lands”
developed from the combined input of community vision at the Barkly Region Collaborative
NRM Workshop held in 2002.
The second category, The Murray Darling Rivercare Award for the Playford River project –
‘Rivercare’, recognising the contribution made to the Sustainable Management, Conservation and
Rehabilitation of a Waterway.
The BLCA developed a NRM strategy in 2002 that focuses on the key issues of fire, erosion,
sustainable land management, people in the rangelands and developing the economy of the region (Towne and King 2002).
The most recent newsletter from BLCA is included in the Barkly Beef Newsletter that is available at the Primary Industry NT webpage (www.primaryindustry.nt.gov.au) under publications”.
