Pastoral Landcare - Alice Springs Region

The Central Land Management Association (CLMA) is the largest Landcare Group by area in Australia, supporting and assisting the pastoral industry with sustainable natural resource management.


Central Land Management  AssociationThe size of area covered by the group and its’ projects extends from Tennant Creek, to south of the SA border.

Current membership includes over 50 pastoral properties in the

Alice Springs region. The CLMA employs technical and scientific staff to ensure credibility and scientifically sound services for its members.

CURRENT MAJOR PROJECTS

Helping the CLMA to Build Regional Capacity

CLMA Co-ordinator employed in capacity of Local Facilitator for delivery of projects associated with the Northern Territory INRM Plan. Funded by NHT.

Central Australian Grazing Strategies Partnership

Three properties undertaking scientific grazing trials to evaluate spell-grazing strategies for central Australia. Funded by the Desert Knowledge CRC.

Parkinsonia Control in the Sandover Catchment

Developing strategic weed management plans for pastoral properties and aboriginal lands, and controlling noxious weeds in the Sandover region. Funded by NHT.

Strategic Catchment Restoration and Maintenance

A project delivering on-ground soil rehabilitation works, field demonstrations and training in soil management. Funded by NLP.

 

OTHER ON-GOING WORK & PROJECTS

Centre Land Watch & EMS

Assisting pastoralists with monitoring land condition over time through photo sites and data collection. Assisting with the development and maintenance of Environmental Management Systems on pastoral properties. Project ongoing – funded by Members

Native grass seed harvesting

Collecting native grass seed for rehabilitation on pastoral lands
Project ongoing – opportunistic

LandTalk Newsletter

Quarterly newsletter to pastoralists, Govt. agencies & community groups with updates of project work and NRM information.
Funded by members. Ongoing (published every 2 months)

ON-GOING BUSINESS

- Provision of natural resource management advice to members
- Attendance at forums and committees (eg. Drought policy reviews, Parks and Conservation Master plan )
- Advocacy for members
- Maintenance of office and communication networks with pastoral community
- Maintenance of vehicles, weed spraying equipment etc.
- Networking at local/regional/national levels (Govt. departments, community organisations, research agencies, NRM stakeholder groups)
