What sort of projects will Community Water Grants Fund?

The most important element of Community Water Grants is community. Your project must engage your local community and have clear public benefits to be eligible. As well as strong community participation, your project must:

  • involve practical, on-the-ground activities that save or protect water resources, and
  • comply with relevant planning, health and environmental regulations and guidelines.

Grants will be awarded to projects in the following categories:

Water treatment - Activities may include:

  • erosion control works and creek bank repair
  • cleaning up wetlands
  • improving water quality in creeks, rivers, lakes and other water bodies
  • reducing pollution in rivers, groundwater or coastal areas by constructing wetlands, buffers or swales
  • implementing water sensitive urban designs

Water savings and efficiency - Activities may include:

  • installing water saving devices in community facilities
  • installing tanks to store rainwater to replace potable or bore water
  • making improvements to the town water supply infrastructure to reduce losses from evaporation, seepage or leaks
  • capping unused bores
  • retrofitting existing, inefficient irrigation systems with water efficient irrigation systems at sports grounds and parks.

Water recycling - Activities may include:

  • treating and reusing greywater or sewage to maintain community grounds such as parks and sports grounds
  • replacing an existing water source with already treated (off-site) wastewate
  • harvesting and using stormwater for community benefits
