Caring for our Country is the Australian Government's new natural resource management initiativeCaring for our Country facilitators work at a state or territory level, and have a detailed understanding of NRM policy and programs.

Their role is to help governments and regional bodies understand the key Australian Government NRM policies, and to act as a voice back to policy makers.

Caring for our Country facilitators are fully funded and directly employed by the Australian Government. They are located in each state and territory. The primary purpose of the Caring for our Country facilitators is to help a wide range of stakeholders to gain a good understanding of how to engage with and participate in Caring for our Country initiatives.

All facilitators working on Caring for our Country will focus on achieving strategic results in the six national priority areas

  • the national reserve system
  • biodiversity and natural icons
  • coastal environments and critical aquatic habitats
  • sustainable farm practices
  • natural resource management in remote and northern Australia
  • community skills, knowledge and engagement.

Responsibilities are shared among facilitators across Indigenous Land Management - supporting Indigenous Australians to meet their land management needs and help them contribute to achieving national priorities in environmental management. Indigenous Australians are key players in managing and protecting Australia's natural and cultural resources. Natural resources management may also provide economic development opportunities for Indigenous Australians.

Sustainable Farm Practices - focusing on the Landcare movement and industry groups to identify and maximise opportunities for partnerships to deliver more sustainable production systems, build capacity within the primary production sector and help the primary production sector contribute to broader environmental improvement.

Environment - focussing on natural resources including the national reserve system, biodiversity and natural icons, coastal and aquatic environments and promoting volunteer and community involvement that will contribute to achieving nationally important environmental priorities through action at the local, regional and state level.

Caring for our Country facilitators provide leadership, and support investment to

  • improve business management skills and governance in community organisations
  • help people and groups access knowledge, communicate more effectively and continuously learn
  • build partnerships and greater participation across the NRM community.

All facilitators work with relevant government, industry and community stakeholders.
