PRESIDENT'S WELCOME AT THE AGM 2005

"The 2004 season was favourable for many members, however low rainfalls in the most regions will mean a hard season and drought declarations.

"We have enjoyed more memberships and are in excellent shape with a busy year. Our last associate application was from a gentleman who owns a machine shop, so at the cattle numbers section on his application he inserted the words, ‘5kg of rump steak in the freezer’. That speaks volumes for the appeal of our association and the calibre of our new members.

"In 2003 we unveiled the year of the outback icon in Katherine, a great tribute to the industry is the statue of Sabu Singh seated proudly on his horse, Docs Leo. We recently presented an icon Maquette to the Chief Minister, as a permanent loan to Parliament House for display to Parliamentary visitors. We also had Territory beef, of the 1824 trademark, included on the Parliament House menu for visiting delegations. It is appropriate to highlight the NT’s largest and most stable primary industry sector in such fashion.

"The NTCA began with a membership of 70% of the NT herd and 71% of pastoral properties.

"In this 21st year we enjoy a membership of around 95% in each respect. Numerous speakers at our forums have complimented us on this unique solidarity; it has allowed us to punch well in any national debate. We don’t intend to retire to any neutral corner.

"The first compliment was at inauguration from the then Primary Industry minister Steve Hatton who said, ‘it will enable industry to speak with a unifi ed and informed voice on the issues’, and ‘that full and frank consultation is the proper foundation upon which we can build a better future for the Territory Beef Industry’. A sentiment re-iterated recently by Ian McBean when he commented that NTCA members, represent the most united, best single group of cattlemen in Australia if not the world. The issues in 1984 were many and complex as they are today, but Ian’s comments refer me fi rst to the most important part of our association, our members."
