In November 2003, the Northern Territory Government
established a Community Reference Group and placed a
moratorium on land clearing and subdivision approvals in the
Daly Region, which includes the Douglas Daly, until 2007.
Adaptive management is a precautionary approach to development. It means learning from experience and applying scientific research to decision-making.
So as areas are developed, baseline data is gathered and all impacts are researched to ensure there is no negative impact on the environment.
Then farming methods are adapted in response to this feedback to ensure good outcomes for both farming and the environment.
An extensive Adaptive Management Plan for the Douglas Daly has been prepared after the Northern Territory Cattlemen’s Association received a Landcare grant.
The steering committee for this project comprised:
- Mr Stuart Kenny, Executive Director, Northern Territory Cattlemen’s Association
- Dr David Ritchie, Chief Executive, Department of Natural Resources, Environment and the Arts
- Mr Rod Gobbey, General manager, Primary Industry Group, Department of Primary Industry, Fisheries and Mines
- Mr Ian McBean, Douglas Daly NTCA representative
- Dr Bill Freeland, GHD Pty Ltd
- Mr Roger Smith Kholassey Pty Ltd
